Showing up for school every day is a big part of how well your child does, both in learning and in life overall. And to help them really shine, taking care of their health is key! This means eating right, getting enough sleep, staying active, and keeping clean – it all matters.

Mrs. Steiner and Mrs. Johnson's second grade classes had an opportunity to have a speaker from the St. Louis Dairy Council visit the classroom. This year both classes have adopted a calf from dairy farms from the St. Louis Dairy Council. This program provide monthy updates on the adopted calf and photos to show how much the calf has grown. Ms Monica joined our classroom and shared information on what cows eat, where they sleep, how often the cow gives milk, and what happens to the milk once it is milked from the cow. We also learned about the health benefits of milk. The classes did a wonderful job listening and representing PBL!

We just wrapped up our science chapter on erosion and Earth's surfaces. We completed several experiments where we created models to test examples of structures of buildings and how land can be eroded. One experiment tested types of soil. Another experiment tested structures and how to make them more sturdy. And the last 2 lessons, we learned about how water can create canyons and landslides. We used a mixture of cornmeal, salt, and water to represent land and then we tested ways to avoid erosion. It was a great hands on experience and the class really enjoyed learning about real life problems and how they are solved.

The past week and a half, 4th graders in Mrs. Dirkses ELA classes have learned about Colonial America. They learned about the early beginnings, the 13 original colonies, why we celebrate Thanksgiving, and how the colonists grew angry over King George III taxes on everyday items. We did a simulation where they were each given money (Skittles) and they were taken by tax collectors for things like having blue eyes or having strings on their shoes. The students didn't like this and could see how the colonists grew angry. We wrapped it up with playing colonial games, where students moved around to different stations and played things like Ring Toss, Ball in Cup, Pick Up Sticks, Peg Board, Egg and Spoon Race, Wooden tops, and String games. These low tech games were a big hit with the kids!! Check out the link below for some more fun pictures! https://photos.app.goo.gl/1bp5rG1eRQENdGWk6

Mrs. Walwer's 4th grade classes conducted an investigation of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. History has shown that there are many scenarios which caused the disappearance of everyone (and everything) in this colony. Students became CSI detectives, and were presented with multiple case files to help form their own report on what happened in this unsolved mystery!
